How Does a Muscle Fail?

When a muscle is overloaded to the point it is pulled at its attachment and can’t handle a load, a cell in the tendon sends a signal to the brain telling it is being stretched beyond what it can bear. The brain then shuts down the muscle. It is similar to a circuit breaker in an electrical circuit. Once this occurs, the muscle can’t take a load anymore. Loss of range of motion, pain, and weakness are experienced.

When this happens, other muscles or tissues attempt to take on more of the load as the body adapts and compensates.
